Remembrance Day

This week we spent some time looking at why we honour veterans on Remembrance Day. We talked about Indigenous Veteran's Day on Monday, read some articles about soldiers and did some writing about what we can do to honour our veterans. We took some time to write postcards that will be shared with Veterans across Canada.


Math

We continued to work on graphing this week. Students created their own survey question and surveyed all the students in the class. They created their own table to record the information they found out. Next, students created a pictograph to represent their data. Students needed to select an appropriate picture, a legend, two titles and labels. We looked at one to one correspondence and are moving towards selecting an appropriate scale for certain data sets.



Writing

We have continued to look at descriptive language in our writing. This week we created a "boring" story that had no descriptive language. Next week, we will work on these stories to change the tone by using different descriptive language.

In word work, we focused in on syllables. Students learned that each syllable in a word has one vowel sound. Students are working towards implementing their understanding of syllables into their writing when sounding out words for spelling.

Social Studies

We are beginning some work to learn about the economy and resources. Students are building their vocabulary around this, so they can engage in research and concept based projects in the coming weeks. This week we looked the definition of economy, goods and services. Students created Frayer models and used pictures to show their understanding.

IMPORTANT DATES September 29 - Orange Shirt Day   September 30 - National Truth and Reconciliation Day, no school Terry Fox Run This week we had our annual Terry Fox Run. Students spent some time in the day learning about Terry and his legacy. We watched a great video made by some of our grade 3/4 students. After the run we got some snacks provided by the Parent Council - thank you! Math This week in math we continued to work with place value. We explored the thousandths and ten thousandth place and practiced representing numbers using Base Ten blocks. We also explored some number patterns through low floor high ceiling problems.   Important Dates November 1-10 - Veteran's Food Drive November 11, 12 - No school for students November 16 - Photo Retake Day Writing This week we worked on making basic sentences and paragraphs more exciting by adding specific nouns, vivid verbs, adjectives and adverbs. We also learned that you can take one basic sentence or paragraph and make it creepy or happy just by choosing different descriptive language to add to the words. Math This week, we connected what we learned about using tables and charts to find patterns to understanding how to represent data. We started looking at pictographs and how to create them from charts and tables. Students explored what makes a good survey question for collecting data for a graph. Science This week we wrapped up our hearing and light topics by designing and building light and sound devices to meet certain criteria.
