February 14 - 16

 Important Dates

  • February 23 - Pink Shirt Day
  • March 4 - Virtual Celebration of Learning

  • Carnaval

This week we participated in the Carnaval Celebration. Student's learned about what Carnaval is and why it's important. They practiced the Carnaval song "Bonhomme, Bonhomme" in French class. Students created Carnaval effiges using Shrinky Dinks and Sharpies to kick off the week. We built the palais de glace outside with the other 3/4/5 classes. We had a few visits from Bonhomme and enjoyed the snowy weather with the sleds.

    Writing and Word Work

This week we learned about alliteration and onomatopoeia, as well as how to write an acrostic poem. Students completed some activities, such as creating a comic, and creating silly sentences, to demonstrate their understanding of alliteration and onomatopoeia. We began looking at Pink Shirt Day. Students used their descriptive language to create acrostic poems for Pink Shirt Day.

    Math

We continued our work with multiplication and using arrays to solve questions. Students engaged in some low floor, high ceiling problem solving to work through a candy themed problem. How many different boxes of candy can you make with 36 candies? What if the candies were 4 different colours and couldn't be side by side, how can you arrange the box now?

    Science

This week we started a few different experiments. Grade 3s wondered what would happen if you filled a jar with water, added salt and left it out. Grade 4s wondered what happens to scrap paper when you leave it soaking in a tub of water. Stay tuned to see what we discovered.
