STEM Virtual Presentation

We have a virtual presentation from Let's Talk Science. They introduced us to the Space Tomato project and helped us work through some different observation activities using our 5 senses, seeds and a tomato.

Math

We continued our exploration of fractions. This week we began work with fractions centres to help visualize different fractions and to see where we can find them in our space.

Impact

We watched a video about Ivan, a gorilla that lived in a mall for most of his life, until he moved to Zoo Atlanta. We did a few surveys to make some predictions about endangered species and gorillas. We followed those with some quick research and did a follow up survey. Once we had our survey results, students explored how data can be represented in tables and in bar graphs.

Writing

We have begun writing a second story, now that we have learned a strategy for planning a story. Students are creating a plan, rough copy, peer edit and annotation, and good copy. Students will create a title page, About the Author page and illustrations if they have time.

We also annotated some poems looking for patterns and noticings. Students realized that all the poems were three lines long and followed a specific pattern. A few students were able to guess they were all Haikus. Next week we will work on some of our own Haikus.
