TMC Visit
Last week our grade 4 students had an opportunity to visit TMC and see what they are in for next year. Students walked up to the school as a group and then were able to tour through the school and participate in some of the options and CTF classes that TMC has to offer.
Space Tomatoes
We participated in our final Space Tomato presentation of the year. Students learned about how climate can impact plant growth. They played with some climate challenges dice and come up solutions to the climate challenge.
Building and Design Centres
Students finished up work on their building centres last week. Grade 3s were exploring bridges and towers and characteristics that make them sturdy and strong. Grade 4s were exploring simple machines and gears and how they can work together to make work less. Students shared what they learned through a design challenge. Grade 3s had to design a sturdy bridge that could span 30cm and hold as many books as possible. The bridge that held the most held 97 books! Grade 4s had to design a machine that included at least 2 simple machines and moved and item at least 1m. We had some very creative designs from pulleys to cars.
Grade 4 Farewell Plan B
While we had to cancel the Grade 4 trip to Heritage Park because of the rain, we still made the most of the day and were able to share some of the fun with our Grade 3 friends. We began the day with some games. Then the Grade 4s went to the Gathering Space to play some relay races and take some pictures. Meanwhile, the Grade 3s worked on a design challenge to create a hat to fit an entire group that held 1 apple. After lunch, we tested out the designs and challenges Mrs. Hewitt and Ms. Arcures' classes to see who could walk the farthest in their design. We finished off the day with a choice of movie (Sherman and Peabody, Ice Age Continental Drift, or Inside Out).
Plants and Animals
We've now begun working through some plant and animal choice boards. Grade 3s are working on projects about animals and Grade 4s are working on projects about plants. Each grade was given a choice between 8 different activities for the last few weeks of school. They are working to complete at least 2 of the choices, but can do as many as possible. Choice Boards can be found in the Google Classroom, but some examples of tasks include plant or animal research, create your own animal, plant dissection, pet care plans, and plant your own garden.
Alien Inline Skating
We finally got our chance to participate in inline skating with Curtis. He has taught students how to put on their gear correctly, stand up, stop, fall safely, break and even a few tricks. Students have enjoyed challenging themselves to the different tricks and games.
Coding
This week we began using Scratch for our coding. Students had the opportunity to try out the new block coding system to see the similarities and differences with Code.org. Students then worked through some preset challenges to learn what kinds of games and programs they could make. Stay tuned next week for some project work!
